Serious Impact: Albemarle boys swim takes second, girls third in Class 5 state meet

Albemarle swimming and diving headed east to Hampton with a number of top notch swimmers intent on making an impact at the VHSL Class 5 State swim and dive championships.

The Patriots came through.

Albemarle’s boys swim team finished as the state runner-up behind a dominant performance from state champion Mills Godwin while the Patriots’ girls took third behind title-winner First Colonial and runner-up Douglas Freeman.

The Patriots’ boys won the 400 freestyle relay and took second in the 200 medley relay to help power that runner-up finish. David King, Chase Easton, Lance Elmore and Josh Hodges came together for both the 400 free win and the 200 medley relay runner-up finish.

King made a huge impact throughout the meet as he added a pair of individual titles in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke to those impressive relay finishes. The junior UVa commit took the 500 free with a time of 4:24.10 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.68.

Hodges took 14th in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Elmore took ninth in the 50 free and 12th in the 100 butterfly. Easton placed 11th in the 200 free and 13th in the 100 free.

Connor Marshall chipped in a 14th place in both the 200 and 500 free events and helped lead the 200 free relay squad to a 16th place finish.

In the diving earlier in the week, Albemarle picked up huge points from Nathan Santiago who took fourth in the state and Kyle Weber who took fifth.

On the girls side, Grey Davis powered the third place finish by the Patriots. Davis, a junior who committed to Northwestern, swam legs of the runner-up 200 medley and 400-freestyle relay squads and doubled up on individual state titles in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. She finished the butterfly in 54.46 and the backstroke in 54.11.

Davis, Sara Wells, Cameron Smith and Sara Czirjak combined on both the runner-up 400 freestyle and 200 medley runner-up teams.

Cziarjak was the state runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. Smith also took fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breaststroke while Wells took ninth in the 500 free and 11th in the 200 free.
