Title Defense Initiated: Louisa County girls blow past Spotsylvania

Louisa County’s girls basketball team sent a message to anyone on their schedule, in their region and the rest of the state Friday night.

The state title defense is on.

The Lions exploded past Spotsylvania 86-19 in the Lions’ home opener, pouring in 35 points in the first quarter for a 35-2 lead at the end of the first.

“Great team effort — we were locked in defensively from the start and we got the game to the pace we want,” said Louisa coach Nick Schreck.

Emion Byers poured in 20 points to lead the Lions while the two-head dragon of Olivia McGhee and Sylvie Jackson notched 13 and 16 points apiece. Byers, a second team All-Jefferson District pick last year, should see an increased role this year as the Lions look to replace several key pieces from last year’s state title team.

Janie Smith chipped in eight points, Nina Fenster had seven and Haley Walker and Acacai Scott each finished with six points.

The Lions will look to move to 2-0 next week on the road against Chancellor Thursday.
