William Monroe edges Madison, Fluvanna in tri-match

In a year where it has been unclear whether any wrestling will take place, hours and days of planning went into making what happened Saturday — a tri-match between Madison County, William Monroe and Fluvanna County — happen.

Something that a year ago seemed merely routine — three wrestling teams squaring off — involved podding wrestlers to prevent virus spread, sterilizing mats between weight classes and no traditional raising of the hand of the victors, just a hasty mat exit.

William Monroe picked up a pair of wins in the tri-match, with the Dragons edging rival Madison County 36-30 after beating Fluvanna 46-24.

The Dragons picked up the win over the Mountaineers with a pair of pins from Connor Marcotte and Ethan Marcotte at 220 pounds and heavyweight respectively. That helped William Monroe overcome pins by Madison’s Jacob Sikora at 138 pounds and Joshua James at 120 pounds.

Monroe’s win over the Flucos came with another group of pins as Connor Marcotte picked up a pin at 220 pounds, Kaleb Doshier at 152 pounds, Chris Taft at 145 pounds and Garrett Morris at 132 pounds. That quartet of pins was enough to overcome a pin by Fluvanna’s Samuel Stoltz at 138 pounds.

In the Madison County clash with Fluvanna, the Flucos edged Madison 36-30, with a pin by Jason Hamshar providing the difference for the Flucos along with a series of forfeits. The Mountaineers got a 5-1 win from Jacob Sikora and a pin from Kris Dobyns in the loss.
