Thanks to a lock down defensive effort in the second half, William Monroe’s girls basketball team beat Western Albemarle 62-35 in the first round of the Daily Progress/NBC29 Holiday Tournament.

The Dragons held Western to just 10 second half points while scoring 30 of their own to ignite the win. Martha Apple had another explosive effort for Monroe with 17 points and eight boards while Iyanna Carey filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Hailey Morris had 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists while Chloe Rush and Ella Weaver each had eight points to round out a balanced offensive performance. Rush also had 10 boards.

The Dragons led by just seven at 32-25 at the break, with Caity Driver scoring all nine of her points before the break for the Warriors. Driver also finished with 11 boards, but the Dragons clamped down after the break and pulled away for the win.

The Dragons face Albemarle tomorrow in the tournament’s second round while the Warriors take on a Deep Run squad in the consolation that fell to Albemarle Friday.
