Western Albemarle baseball’s pitching staff is off to a fast start.

Starter Ben Winslow and reliever Luke Craytor combined to throw a n0-hitter Tuesday night in a 7-0 win for the Warriors over William Monroe in both squads’ season opener.

Winslow — the reigning Jefferson District pitcher of the year who reset the program’s record for ERA with a mark of 0.29 a year ago — struck out eight in five innings of work on the mound and Craytor, a second team All-JD outfielder a year ago, threw two innings of no-hit baseball, striking out four. Winslow picks up the win to move to 1-0 on the year.

The Warriors’ offense made sure that no-hit effort held up, with Cooper Nelson and Daniel Jones each knocking in two runs to lead the way.

Western built a 3-0 lead in the first three innings, then blew the game open in the fifth, with Nelson, Jones, Aiden Carver-Woodson and James Meenan each knocking in runs during that frame.

The Dragons will try and bounce back against Spotsylvania Friday while Western will return to action next Tuesday at home against Louisa County.
