Class 3 Track Recap: Monticello’s Mathes wins 3200 meter title, CHS’s Brantley wins 300 hurdles

Monticello’s Mathes put together a brilliant performance at the Class 3 state track meet at Liberty University.

Mathes won the 3200 meter race to earn an individual state title and also took third in the 1600 meters as the sophomore put his mark on on the meet and took the next step in his career after placing ninth in the state cross country meet back in the fall, then third in the Class 3 state indoor meet. Mathes has worked his way up the distance leaderboard methodically over the last two years and now he brings home his first individual state title.

He wasn’t the only local athlete who had a big day in the Class 3 boys meet. Fluvanna County’s Aidan Girard finished second in the 800 meets and took eighth in the 400 meters. Charlottesville’s Eli Cook took fifth in the 1600 and seventh in the 800 and his teammate Edison Tennant grabbed fifth in the 800. The Black Knights’ 4×800 relay team took fourth in the state.

Three area throwers also got going, with Alex Rosenbaum of Goochland taking fifth, Bryce Hoffman of William Monroe grabbing seventh and Charlottesville’s Dante Bernardini taking eighth.

On the girls side in Class 3, Charlottesville’s squad finished fifth overall, with Evelyn Brantley’s state title run in the 300 hurdles leading the way. Brantley clocked a 45.88 for a school record. Lynch also took sixth in the state in the triple jump.
