Covenant football beats Broadwater in season opener

Last year didn’t go the way Covenant football wanted it to, with the Eagles positing a 1-7 record with their season ending in mid October.

But if Saturday is any indication, Covenant is back with a renewed focus.

The Eagles’ 8-man squad got its season off to a strong start Saturday with a 36-18 victory over Broadwater Academy in Chad Ciesel’s first game as Covenant’s head coach.

Covenant leaned on a strong ground game led by Jonathan Newton and Zach Pirtle, with Newton rushing for 156 yards and two touchdowns while Pirtle nearly crossed the century mark himself with 97 yards and a score.

Covenant quarterback Mark Wamhoff threw a touchdown to Alex McWilliams from six yards out and Wamhoff finished with another score of his own on the ground while rushing for 37 yards. Wamhoff went 6-for-9 for 59 yards.

As a team, the Eagles finished with 327 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Stephen Burton and Wamhoff each had interceptions while Chase Campbell stacked up 7.5 tackles. Ryan Steeper had 5.5 stops and broke up a pass.

The Eagles (1-0) travel to take on Blessed Sacrament Friday.
