Miller baseball drops North Cross, survives Greenbrier

The two games of Saturday’s doubleheader couldn’t have possibly gone more different for Miller School baseball.

One a blowout, one a pitchers’ duel.

But both ended in wins for the Mavericks as Miller cruised past North Cross 16-1 and then survived a clash with Greenbrier Christian 1-0 behind some brilliant work on the mound by Drue Hackenberg who struck out 11.
“I was just staying in myself, working my mechanics like I should — we wanted to get the curveball over, changeup was okay, but just getting it over for strikes,” Hackenberg said. “It’s a huge win for us, it’ll really keep our confidence going, we had a huge week and that’s a really good team.”

Hackenberg scattered three singles and surrendered just four walks in six innings of work against Greenbrier with the 11 strikeouts helping the Mavericks hold on to that one-run lead that they earned on a solo homer by centerfielder Nathan Fink, Fink’s second home run of the day after he knocked one out against North Cross. Fink went 2-for-3 at the plate against Greenbrier including the homer. Patrick Rakes and T.J. Brooks were the lone other Mavericks to pick up hits. Miller left four total runners on base.

The offensive numbers in the nightcap were quite a bit different than the first contest as Miller piled on the runs against North Cross early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first and tacking on another six-run inning in the fourth to help end the game early. The Mavericks stacked up 18 hits, with all 12 batters who went to the plate picking up at least one hit.

Fink exploded for five RBI in the win over North Cross, going 3-for-3 with his first homer of the day and a double. Landon Abrahamson went 2-for-3 with two RBI, notching a double and a triple. Lucas Adam and Eddy Navarro each went 2-for-2 and Nicholas Yowell went 2-for-3 to round out the Mavericks with multi-hit outings while Adam and Dustin Wood each knocked in two runs. Jacob Exum and Chaz Harvey each had doubles while Adam and Laken Tignor both stole a base.

Henry Hardie threw five innings of four-hit baseball and struck out five against the Raiders.

The Mavericks moved to 8-2 on the year with the two wins and they’ll face Trinity Episcopal on the road Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
