Smith strikes out 18, Fork Union shuts out STAB

Fork Union’s Connor Smith was in a groove Tuesday.

The Blue Devils senior, a Bridgewater commit, unleashed an 18-strikeout one-hitter Tuesday afternoon as Fork Union dropped St. Anne’s-Belfield 8-0. Smith pounded the zone needed 95 pitches to mow down the Saints and didn’t even allow a single walk on the night.

Offensively, Joshua Labasky had a solid night for Fork Union going 2-for-4 with two RBI in the leadoff spot. Smith scored a pair of runs himself to help his own cause and went 2-for3 with an RBI. Clayton Dunaway and Jack Bowdish each knocked in a run. Braden Piersol drew three walks.

Tyler Benick scratched out the Saints’ lone hit. Nolan Bruton was solid in relief on the mound for STAB, striking out five in three innings of work. The Saints had seven errors in the field as only two of T.K. Baker’s runs in his three innings were earned.
