STAB girls blow past Trinity Episcopal

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team is all business so far in LIS conference play.

The Saints have beaten LIS opponents so far this season by an average margin of 41.6 points per game including Tuesday’s 74-21 dismantling of Trinity Episcopal at home. That’s in large part because the Saints are setting the tone in practice.

“They really grind in practice, they’re really committed to making one another better and it goes on both ends of the floor every single day,” said STAB coach Phil Stinnie. “They really push each other.”

Four different Saints were in double figures led by Ruby Adkins who scored 17 points including three 3-pointers. Olivia Wagner scored 11 and Sabrina Lewis and Kymora Johnson had 10 points each. That kind of balance is a big reason the Saints are currently 13-1.

The Saints’ also have depth to spare and Tuesday they went five-in, five out and there wasn’t much drop off against the overmatched Titans.

“This is probably one of the deeper teams I’ve ever had,” Stinnie said. “We have some very skilled players that are very unselfish and that makes the camaraderie work when they’re on the floor. They know who the leaders are and the leaders lead.”

The Saints also play some suffocating defense, holding Trinity to four, eight, four and five points by quarter.

STAB will square off with Saint John Paul the Great Friday on the road before returning to LIS play next Friday with a road rematch with Collegiate.
