Lockdown: STAB defense, Mallory’s 10 steals power Saints past Woodberry

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s defense was excellent Friday night. With the offense clicking too, that made for some easy sledding for the Saints as STAB stayed unbeaten in Prep League play with an 80-44 victory over Woodberry Forest.

The Saints held STAB to just 18 points in the second half and just four of those 18 came in the fourth quarter. Chance Mallory’s 10 steals, which combined with his 17 points gave the point guard the rare steals-points double double, helped spark that defensive effort. Meanwhile Carter Lang was cleaning up on the boards with 12 rebounds to go with 20 points for his own double double.

Offensively, John St. Germain provided a serious spark, with 20 points and three assists, attacking the lane against the Tigers repeatedly.

“(I was) getting downhill, touching the paint and then spotting my open teammates, driving and kicking to them,” St. Germain said.

The Saints led 23-10 in the first quarter with 3-pointers from Austin Williford, Mallory and St. Germain helping pu STAB up. The Saints extended that lead to 48-26 by halftime as Lang got going in the second quarter where he scored 11 of his 20 points.

Williford finished with 13 points, five boards and three assists. Mallory added four rebounds and four assists to his explosion of steals. Lang had a trio of blocks and four assists of his own and St. Germain had four steals.

Sam Crosby had 14 to lead Woodberry Forest.

STAB takes on Cape Henry Saturday while Woodberry Forest takes on Wakefield also on Saturday.
